Top seed Ash Barty is through to the third round after winning 6-1, 7-5 over Clara Tauson. A far more promising second set for the Danish teenager, who managed to break the world No 1 when she was first serving for the match. Barty, who faces the winner of today’s Shelby Rogers-Sorana Cirstea match, has never made it past the fourth round at Flushing Meadows but appears poised to make a run at her first hard-court major title after previous wins on clay and grass, having won her second career WTA 1000 title on the surface this year and 25 of 28 matches on American pavement since the start of 2019.
Emma Raducanu is through to the third round of the US Open after holding on for a 6-2, 6-4 win in 82 minutes. A very composed performance from the British teenager amid an overflow crowd on Court 10. She advances to face Sara Sorribes Tormo, the 41st-ranked Spaniard who’s just won in straight sets over Hsieh Su-wei over on Court 12.
