Berlin (dpa) — Lamine Diack, the disgraced former president of world athletics, has died aged 88. Senegal President Macky Sall said on Twitter on Friday: “With the death of Lamine Diack, Senegal has lost one of its most illustrious sons. “A renowned sportsman, former mayor of Dakar, a former MP, a former government minister and former president of the IAAF, Diack was a man of great importance. “My heartfelt condolences to the entire nation.” Diack led the IAAF, later rebranded World Athletics, from 1999 to 2015 but was convicted in 2020 of taking Russian bribes to cover up possible doping.
