The Pittsburgh Knights broke the news yesterday with the disappointing reveal that its Rainbow Six Siege esports players will not participate in the upcoming Six Mexico Major, one of the most awaited tournaments in the 2021 season.
New travel restrictions from Australia got announced and most Rainbow Six teams are now in jeopardy. While Ubisoft made efforts to find solutions, the obstacle was too high this time. The Knights have officially withdrawn from the competition.
Rainbow Six Siege Knights
The quarantine measures imposed by the Australian government did not allow the Pittsburgh Knights to fly out to Mexico for the Mexico City Major. Fans got to see an official statement from the team, reaffirming their intentions to compete in the Rainbow Six Siege esports scene despite this major setback.
)
This is unfortunate news as the Knights held a successful streak too. They finished first at APAC South 2021 – Stage 2 and piled up podium finishes for the major part of the year. Still, Mark “Dino” Abboud and his teammates will receive $5 thousand and 50 SI points. This is the equivalent of a top 13 finish.
Six Mexico Major
While this news is breaking the hearts of the Pittsburgh Knights and esports fans the show must still go on. Ubisoft and tournament staff decided not to replace the Australian team. Only the remaining 15 teams are going to compete for the title. Ubisoft is looking at changing the Six Mexico Major competitive format and schedule to fit this new environment.
)
Seeing as last year Virtus.pro got the same treatment, the Rainbow Six Siege esports community did not take the news well. Some would rather have another team qualify to keep a regular 16 team bracket, while others lament Australia’s choices of not letting the Knights fly to Mexico. But the biggest loss here is for the Pittsburgh Knights, who gritted their teeth and qualified for the Six Mexico Major only to be stuck at home.
