- MCC has officially replaced the word ‘batsman’
- Alex Hartley condemns negative response on Twitter
Marylebone Cricket Club has officially amended the laws of the game to remove the gendered term “batsman” and replace it with the alternative “batter”, asserting its belief that “the use of gender-neutral terminology helps reinforce cricket’s status as an inclusive game for all”.
The change was considered but ultimately rejected when the laws were last redrafted in 2017, but the MCC has since come to believe that “the move to ‘batter’ is a natural progression, aligning with the terms of bowlers and fielders that already sit within the laws”.
