The travel bug bit once more and this time it brought me to Munich.
It’s been four years since I was last there when I was interrailing through Europe in 2014!
So why Munich?
I was lucky enough that my sister was heading for a work conference so I could get free accommodation for a night! But since she wasn’t coming till Saturday, I booked a hostel for Friday night so I could fly off straight after work for a lovely weekend trip!
Tickets with Ryanair were €50 return so I could not complain.
So the weekend turned into a sort of solo travel trip with the odd time shared with le sister.
So here are my
Five Things To Do in Munich
1. English Gardens (Englischer Garten)
Firstly, make your way to ‘The Wave’ (Eisbachwell) to watch the locals surf, crash, and amaze in the freezing water.
Secondly, take a stroll up towards the north of the gardens where the Chinese Tower Beer Garden (Chinesischen Turn Bier Garten) is for some hearty local cuisine.
We treated ourselves to some roast chicken, kase spätzle (dough dumplings with cheese), currywurst (sausage with ketchup and curry powder), and a pretzel.
Then wash it down with some beer if you so fancy 😉
Finally, paddle of all that food at the lake in the middle of the garden. It costed a tenner for the both of us to paddle for 30 minutes so it was fun enough to try not to drive into birds.
2. Marienplatz
Take a walk up from the giant fountain at Karlsplatz and pass all the retail shops till you get to the Marienplatz square.
I was lucky enough to see a free live concert by Orange Fizz who were an absolute treat to bop to.
They even ended their show right before the Glockenspiel started playing.
Even in the night, there were fantastic musician buskers
– complete with cellos, double basses, rapping and more.
PS. be aware that most shops close on the Sunday!
Every single one was closed on its main street from Karlsplatz to Marienplatz.
3. Viktualienmarkt
Instead of sitting down at a restaurant for lunch,
go food hunting at the local market – Viktualienmarkt.
Make sure to choose wisely before filling up as there is just too much to choose from.
Firstly, I enjoyed a roasted pork belly bun with a sweet mustard.
Secondly, got me 100 grams of garlic and herb prawns to munch on.
Lastly, I washed it off with a great flat white coffee paired with a handmade dark chocolate florentiner.
Or go extremely local and just eat an entire giant pickle whole.
It’s only a euro – they seemed pretty juicy too.
4. Mariahilfplatz
There was another local market I found at Mariahilfplatz called Auer Dult.
Managed to find that out on a local website that shows a summary of events happening in the city.
And once again it was filled with tasty treats.
So to start off the savoury tastebuds, I got a bratwurst sandwich with ketchup and mayo.
Then I tried this intriguing white fluffiness called germknödel.
It’s a sweet yeast steamed bun with a base of spiced plum jam smothered in creamy vanilla custard topped with some poppy seeds and sugar on top.
The flavour and texture was mind-blowing but it was so massive I ended up sharing it with another tourist I met there from Colorado!
Perks of solo travelling – meeting randommers adds to the experience!
5. Meet strangers
Continuing with that theme, I made a new friend as I was having a delicious Icelandic filter coffee at Cafe Blá since there weren’t enough tables inside so we shared!
Similarly, I ended up hanging out with the Euro Youth Hotel staff, Sebastian and Anthony, and ended up going out for a bop at Cord till the wee hours of the morning. Great place for some dance tunes with a jet ski for you to play around with! Also totally recommend that hostel for it’s great location, facilities and craic 😀
Munich is a great city and was beautiful to experience in its autumn season after the Oktoberfest madness.
It was amazing to have a random weekend getaway to break up the work week! Best part is…we have the Bank Holiday weekend coming up soon too!!
