On February 15, 2006 a zookeeper was taken to the hospital for minor injuries after being mauled by the resident female lion, Sheeba.<ref>https://www.wsfa.com/story/4509320/zoo-worker-attacked-at-the-birmingham-zoo/</ref> On September 16, 2019 two white-crested laughing thrushes were discovered missing from their habitat. It is unknown whether the birds were taken or flew off once their containment was compromised.<ref>https://www.al.com/news/2019/09/two-white-crested-laughingthrush-birds-go-missing-from-birmingham-zoo.html</ref> In 2019 a formal complaint was submitted to the [[Association of Zoos and Aquariums]] ethics committee over the alleged poor treatment of staff and poor working conditions.
