ユネスコの世界遺産委員会は26日に「奄美大島、徳之島、沖縄島北部及び西表島」が世界自然遺産に、27日に「北海道・北東北の縄文遺跡群」が世界文化遺産として登録されたと発表した(ユネスコ、官邸、NHK、日経新聞、NHKその2)。
奄美大島と徳之島、それに沖縄本島北部と西表島では、アマミノクロウサギやヤンバルクイナ、イリオモテヤマネコなどの固有種が存在するおよそ4万3000ヘクタールの森林などが世界自然遺産に登録されることとなった。日本の世界自然遺産への登録は今回が5件目であるという。
