鉄鋼業界は年間約20億トンを生産し、30億トン以上のCO2を排出している。これは温室効果ガス全体の約7%にあたる。だが、鉄の還元に炭素ではなく再生可能エネルギーで電気分解されたグリーン水素を使う新しい方法によって、2021年夏にはスウェーデンのヴェンチャー企業が“グリーンスチール”を製造した。この技術が広く普及すれば、業界が排出するCO2の9割、世界全体のCO2排出量の6%を減らすことが可能となる。
